About Marshall/KMK Acoustics, Ltd.

We have been providing acoustical consulting and technology design services to architects, engineers and facility owners since 1971. Our projects and clients include world class performing arts facilities, institutions of learning, casino hotels, corporate headquarters, house of worship and music technology facilities. The firm has completed more than 2,000 successful projects, including multi-purpose auditoriums, theaters, recital halls, houses of worship, legislative chambers, ballrooms, conference centers, airports, coliseums and stadiums in this country and abroad.

The company is a direct descendant of the Cambridge consulting community from where acoustical and technology consulting began. For specific reasons that are beyond the scope of this web-page, and to some extent based on the influence of a few individuals who happened to have doctorates in acoustics; sound system, video system, control system and similar media consulting as a legitimate business model, effectively began in the mid 20th century as a subset to several nationally recognized acoustical consulting firms. Although some have mistakenly claimed to have “invented the internet”, those who know the true history of the development of the internet, know that the concept of what we now know as the world wide web, was first introduced by Bolt Beranek and Newman, a Cambridge Massachusetts consulting firm first known for acoustical consulting.

L Gerald Marshall, Fellow of the Acoustic Society of America and a founding active member of the firm, began his career in the Cambridge consulting community of the 1960’s. Mr. Marshall and the firm have been applying professional consulting services within the original Cambridge consulting model for forty years with consistent performance success. “Absolutely remarkable acoustics”, “Acoustically superb” are two accolades that have been quoted for our recent recital hall project shown on this page. What the photo does not show is a significant technology package that includes a complete large screen digital projection system, a concert sound system, a professional quality surround sound system, HD video capture systems and master quality recording systems neatly tucked within this visually magnificent facility.

Our early technology projects were effectively limited to large scale sound system designs implemented in close coordination with our acoustical consulting efforts. As technology progressed since the founding of the firm, the company’s technology design responsibilities have routinely expanded to include a wide range of low voltage systems and services including video systems, control systems, IT Infrastructure, Voice and Data systems design.

Well prepared written communications and proven design documentation methodologies including drawings, reports, estimates and outlines are the foundation of our service offerings.

All projects are managed with principal attention, professional respect and a goal of complete, mutual success regardless of project size, scope or difficulty.

L. Gerald Marshall, FASA

Mr. Marshall is an internationally recognized expert in the field of architectural acoustics and Fellow of the Acoustic Society of America. Over 2500 completed projects providing acoustical and consulting design services to architects, engineers and facility managers. Project types have included performing arts centers, theaters, higher education classrooms, lecture halls, convention centers, hotels, residences, industrial and corporate facilities. Developer of the “ELR” acoustical analysis system used for testing room acoustic characteristics and sound system performance in auditoria of all kinds. The ELR system has been the subject of major technical papers in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society as well as presentations delivered at Acoustical Society of America meetings. The JAES article on ELR was selected for inclusion in the Sound Reinforcement Anthology, Vol. 2 published by Audio Engineering Society. The ELR measurement program is specifically geared to examining and quantifying sound-field behavior with respect to both clarity and reverberance for either amplified, or unamplified speech and music. The book “Architectural Acoustics: Principles and Practice, 2nd Edition” as published by John Wiley & Sons, contains a chapter written by Mr. Marshall entitled “Acoustical Design: Places for Listening”. Performing musician with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Colorado Symphony, the Oklahoma Symphony, and the United States Military Academy Band at West Point.

Thomas Knauss, CTS-D is the President of Marshall/KMK Acoustics, Ltd and KMK Technologies, LLC. The two firms provide consulting, design and project management services in the fields of acoustics, sound, video, structured cabling and related technologies. Mr. Knauss has been providing construction document consulting and design services to architects and engineers for highly acclaimed performing arts venues, multiple corporate facilities and technology rich higher education projects since 1998. Responsible for numerous large scale system integration projects throughout his career including AT&T World Headquarters Chicago, Dulles Airport, Pittsburgh International Airport, Rhode Island Convention Center, IBM World Headquarters, Tropicana East Expansion, Tropicana “The Quarter” Expansion, The Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa, Revel Resort and Casino, as well as other significant construction projects for corporate, entertainment and higher education projects. ANSI/ InfoComm CTS-D Certification, member of the Audio Engineering Society, InfoComm International and a founding member and of the Independent Technical Services Provider Council (ITSP) within InfoComm International. Vladamir Krastev, RCDD provides consulting, planning, design, project management and implementation management services for Information Technology, Cable Plant, Security, Data Center infrastructure systems as well as significant experience with Fiber Optic Cabling systems and related infrastructures. Mr. Krastev maintains significant experience with full cycle projects and vertical markets including government and defense facilities, higher education classrooms, higher education campus infrastructure, major corporate headquarters, financial and pharmaceutical companies. Typical project responsibilities include program narratives, budget estimates, device locations in plan, single line drawings, mechanical details, scope of work outlines, specifications, bid documents, cost estimates, bid review and project administration.

Mr. Krastev is a current member of BICSI and maintains the industry’s highest level of certification: RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer), certifications from the Siemon Company (Cabling System Certified Designer) and Corning Corporation (Fiber Optic Network Cabling Certified Designer).
